Democracy, Human Rights and Freedom of Expression

This program seeks to support the development of effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels of the Brazilian State. We believe in strengthening democratic institutions and in the central role of civil society in democracy, as well as in building a culture of respect and protection of human rights by state authorities and the Brazilian government.

It is structured around four axes:

1
Rule of law

Promoting the rule of law, nationally and internationally; guaranteeing equal access to justice for all; strengthening the principle of separation of powers, judicial independence, and civic space; and expanding social participation.

2
Human Rights

Focusing on the internal capacities of the Brazilian State in matters of human rights; the enjoyment of rights; the strengthening of education and culture in human rights; and the respect and appreciation of the diversities of race, nationality, culture, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age and disability. The importance of internalizing international systems for the protection of human rights, with special emphasis on the inter-American system, is particularly important.

3
Transparency and fight against corruption

Emphasizing the relationship between governance and the reality of corruption and lack of transparency, and its impact on the full enjoyment of rights.

4
Freedom of Expression

Respecting, protecting, promoting and guaranteeing, under the principle of equality and non-discrimination, the right to freedom of expression for people who live permanently or temporary in Brazil. The development of freedom of expression contributes to the strengthening of peace, sustainable development, human rights and the fight against poverty. It must be a priority to respect, promote, protect and guarantee, under the principles of equality and non-discrimination, transparency, veracity and confidentiality, the right to the widest access to information and the protection of personal data held by the bodies of the Brazilian State.
