In April and May, the Brazil Office is promoting a course on the functioning of the Inter-American Human Rights System in partnership with the Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies at San Diego State University
The course is online and free for those selected. It takes place once a week, over eight sessions, always on Fridays, except on holidays. It will begin on April 4. Applications must be submitted using the form at this link by March 19. Those selected will be contacted directly by the course organizers.
The intention is to bring activists and academics involved in the defense of democracy, environmental issues, human rights, race and gender closer to the Inter-American Human Rights System, which is formed by the Inter-American Commission and the Court of Human Rights. The content emphasizes above all issues related to Indigenous rights and the environment.
“We want to increase Brazilian civil society’s knowledge and advocacy capacity regarding this system, which is so important in the Americas,” said Paulo Abrão, executive director of the Brazil Office and former executive secretary of the Inter-American Commission (2016-2020). “We have assembled a competent group of professors, including rapporteurs from the Commission, who will provide a comprehensive overview of the history, operations, and ways to access and interact with the system.”
