The debate will last an hour and a half and is an event parallel to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, which takes place in New York from March 5 to 17 in its 67th session. Ana Barreto, director of the Laboratory of Policies for Black Women and consultant for the Washington Brazil Office (WBO) will moderate the debate among four panelists: Edilza Sotero, from the Center for the Study of Labor Relations and Inequalities (CEERT); Maria Sylvia de Oliveira, from Geledés (Black Women's Institute); Naiara Leite, from the Odara Institute; and Valdecir Nascimento from Articulation of Brazilian Black Women (AMNB).
The initiative is from the Washington Brazil Office in partnership with the Black Women Policy Lab, AMNB, Ceert, Odara, Geledés and the Latin America Observatory of The New School of New York University.
“It is very important to give visibility and scope to the perspectives of black Brazilian women on the issue of the global anti-racial struggle. Brazil occupies a prominent place in this matter, and the Brazilian movements, under the leadership of their own protagonists, are now coming to New York to report their trajectories and their concerns, in an event parallel to the session of the United Nations that discusses the theme,” Barrett said.
“We will continue to prioritize the international strengthening of black movements in Brazil, which have a lot to contribute to the agendas of organizations and the international community,” said Paulo Abrão, executive director of the WBO.
