The importance of strengthening the civic space in Brazil is seen as the set of legal, political, institutional, and practical conditions necessary for non-governmental actors to have access to information, express themselves, associate, organize and participate in public life. This implies discussing civil rights and liberties, such as access to information; freedom of expression, assembly and association; the right to privacy; the State's duty to protect its citizens; digital and media freedoms and rights; the favorable environment for the work of civil society organizations (CSOs); the participation of citizens and CSOs in public decision-making.

Respect for human rights defenders or social activists must be prioritized, in particular, to protect the lives of witnesses, victims, human rights defenders, social leaders, peasants, environmentalists, indigenous people, trade unionists and independent journalists threatened and their families. We believe that preserving the rights of activists and social leaders is a fundamental part of strengthening democracy in Brazil.
