On Thursday, May 23, the Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA) announced a partnership with the WBO (Washington Brazil Office). The organization, created in 1992, during the Lasa Congress (Latin American Studies Associations) held in Los Angeles, is dedicated to strengthening ties between those who study Brazilian reality in the United States, Brazil, and other parts of Latin America.
“The Executive Committee’s decision to make BRASA a partner organization of the WBO strengthens our common interests in relation to Brazil,” said James Green, president of the WBO Board of Directors, professor of Brazilian history and culture at Brown University, and former president of BRASA (2002 to 2004).
The WBO is a non-partisan and independent think tank that disseminates analysis and practices of Brazilian civil society to an international audience. It shares with BRASA the mission of defending academic freedom and democracy.
With this partnership, the number of civil society organizations linked to the WBO reaches 65. The formation of this group gives greater reach, legitimacy, and strength to international actions that aim to promote, fortify, and defend democracy, human rights and freedom of expression, in addition to causes linked to the environment, the Amazon and climate change, racial justice and overcoming racism, and themes linked to gender and sexual diversity, among other issues.
