WBO Supports Women's Organizations in Reviewing Brazilian Commitments to CEDAW

WBO Press Release
22 de maio de 2024

The Washington Brazil Office (WBO) supports its affiliates and partners in a process that will verify the commitments made by the Brazilian State in relation to combating all forms of discrimination against women. These commitments derive from Brazil's adherence to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Among the topics that will be analyzed are: violence against women, equal political participation, Indigenous women's health, management of territories by Quilombola women, domestic workers, women living on the streets and in prison, self-designation, rights and recognition of trans women, among others.

At the beginning of May, the WBO held two thematic and explanatory meetings about the Convention and its details for a group of feminist organizations. The meetings brought together organizations interested in the topics with those that produced and sent to reports to the Commission with indicators, statistics, and recommendations to support the review and hearing on the verification of the commitments assumed by the Brazilian State.

This verification will take place in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday, May 23rd. Throughout the entire process, the WBO prepared a support agenda with documents and guides for the people and organizations who traveled to Geneva to attend this session.

For the first time in this process, Artificial Intelligence tools were used to prepare a summary of the 40 reports, signed by more than 100 civil society organizations, creating a summary to better understand the theme of each report, as well as its translation into Portuguese and a summary of the main points by area.

At the same time, the WBO is promoting through a WhatsApp group the real-time coverage of the hearing in Brazil in this process of reviewing commitments with the presence of correspondents in Geneva and a live broadcast.

After the session ends, on May 28th, the organization will engage in a general, hybrid assessment of this entire process in Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, and on Zoom.

The WBO initiated this process, which was carried out with support from Fundo Elas and the organization Awelle chairing the deliberations.
